Living with pain in Greenville SC? Eventually, all of our patients decided “enough is enough” and they request an eBook (HERE) or contact us (HERE). What do almost all of them have in common? PAIN! The majority of people who reach out to us have decided they’ve been suffering long enough and need a solution to their problem.
This is fantastic, because physical therapists can help their patients take care of their pain. But the problem is, this leads to a common misconception that physical therapy is ONLY about FIXING PAIN. However, fixing pain is not the BEST THING that physical therapists can do for you. If you really want pain relief, then you could just go to your doctor’s office or pharmacy.
Physical therapists are not there to just help you with pain relief. This is something we address but it's not the most important thing that we’ll to do for you. In fact, pain is not the problem. Pain is a stimulus or indicator that something is wrong. A large mistake a lot of patients make when they see a physical therapist is that they think it’s all about their pain. So, at the first sign of the pain going away they think that the problem is fixed. This is one of the main reasons people end up back in physical therapy time and time again.
During a Physical Therapy Evaluation we come up with a plan, and it’s completely up to you to decide whether or not it’s right for you. Ultimately, the plan will not be about easing pain.Decreasing pain is usually something we can accomplish within the first few sessions, but the plan is to give you the best possible shot at remaining active and involved in the life you want without painkillers, injections, or multiple trips to the doctor’s office. What we have to do is get to the bottom of why that pain is happening in the first place.
If all we do is fix the pain, the problem that is causing the pain will still be there. You can go to a pharmacy and get some pills, if that’s what you want, but you’re still going to have: problems in your joints, stiff and tight muscles, weak muscles, misalignments in your spine, etc. So what we’re going to do (which is different from most physical therapy clinics), is to get to the source of the problem so that you don’t have to see us or your doctor over and over again.
So don’t fall victim of STOPPING Physical Therapy after the pain disappears. The pain going away is STEP 1 in the process of getting you back to the activities you love. STEP 2 is to fix the main problem that caused your pain, so that it stays away.
