The temporomandibular joint, commonly called the TMJ, is your jaw joint. There are two temporomandibular joints, one on each side of your head, just in front of your ears. If you place your fingertips on top of the skin in front of your ears and open your mouth so your jaw drops you will feel the joint moving under your fingers. A single specific cause of TMJ pain can often be difficult to discern as it is frequently due to a combination of factors affecting the joint.
